![]() ![]() When tiling, it is worth taking your time with the first row, as any imperfection at the start will be exaggerated the more tiles are placed on top.Attach and level a wood beam that your tiles can sit on top of.I decided to start tiling the opening sections first.The gas fireplace that was in the chimney had been disconnected but I decided to use fire resistance plasterboard inside the opening in case a future owner tried to light a fire in the chimney.Once happy with the structure I attached plasterboard to the wood beams using plasterboard screws. ![]() Surrounds also come in a range of designs, materials and patterns so that you can find one that fits in with the décor of your home. I also made sure to take into account the width of the plasterboard that I would tile onto when building the structure. As the size of fireplace openings are never quite the same between homes, fireplace surrounds come in a range of shapes and sizes to suit. And using the same sponge with the remaining white water, smear that over the bricks, like painting the bricks. The monochromatic palette in varying shades of grey is very trendy right now, and only makes the vitality and changing colors of fire stand out even more. I made sure the wooden structure was the correct size so I could have full tiles across the opening. Twist the open end together to close it off and apply steady pressure to the back of the piping bag with one hand while guiding the tip with the other. This is the artistic part, my favorite of all Using a bucket and a grouting sponge you want to soften it out the mortar, make it smooth.I drilled holes in bricks and, using wall plugs, screwed the beams to the breast.I first attached wooden beams to bricks.Based on the original opening of the chimney I was able to figure out that I create a structure that would be 5 tiles wide and 5 tiles tall for a new opening. If the area youre planning to paint is bare or new plastered, smooth out any lumps with a fine sandpaper. This was much more visually appealing as it meant there were no cut tiles along the edges. Use an easy, dry trowel to firmly and briskly rub the floor roundly using burnishing as you compact and smooth out the plaster for an exquisite result. The white square tiles I used were placed in a grid-like format and I was able to build the structure so that I was able to use full tiles around the opening. Stones, limewash, plaster, concrete, woods, etc. One trend you may see popping up more and more is that old world finish. A heavy influence in my design style is earthy and natural/organic materials. If you are looking to do this yourself and the original chimney breast is flat or already plastered you shouldn’t have to do this step. I knew I would not be able to tile directly onto this so decided to build a structure with a flat surface attached to the fireplace surround. The bricks that made up our chimney breast had been built in a way that meant they were not flush with each other, and although structurally sound, the pattern was all over the place.
